Describe your role at BDI and the key areas you specialise in?
I am involved in several aspects of the business, from preparing fee proposals to managing client relationships and securing new work through close collaboration with architects and contractors. I lead one of the technical teams, overseeing technical design, calculations and drawing production.
Our main goal is to ensure high-quality and cost-effective solutions. I also regularly carry out site visits, provide technical guidance and lead the projects I manage from concept to completion.
What kind of projects do you typically work on?
I specialise in domestic and residential projects, including internal structural alterations, home extensions, and loft conversions. These types of projects require a careful and thoughtful approach to ensure that any newly designed structure integrates seamlessly with the existing structure.
One of the things I enjoy most about working on these types of projects is figuring out how the existing structure is put together – understanding this is key to coming up with solutions that are both effective and minimally invasive. I work closely with architects and contractors from the early design stages through to construction, collaborating to develop practical, cost-effective solutions tailored to each project.
What do you enjoy most about working at BDI Structural Solutions?
I really enjoy the variety of projects I get to work on – no two are ever the same. Over the past eight years at BDI, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of both domestic and commercial schemes, each with its own unique challenges and requirements.
That constant variation has given me the opportunity to build up my experience across various aspects of structural engineering in a relatively short period of time. This keeps the work interesting and rewarding, and it’s one of the things I value most about working at BDI.
What’s been your most memorable project at BDI so far?
My most memorable project I’ve worked on at BDI is Dunham House. It involved the conversion of a beautiful Victorian house that had previously been split into nine apartments back into a single-family home. The project also included a newly built detached garage, an orangery, and a garden fountain. It stands out to me not only because of its scale and complexity of the work, but also because it was one of my very first major projects.
I learned an incredible amount from it, both technically and from a project management perspective. It was the first time I had to actively liaise with the contractor on site, deal with unexpected site challenges, and come up with practical technical solutions in real time. This project gave me a solid foundation in both the design and delivery sides of structural engineering and has stayed with me ever since.
