Internal alterations and remodelling of the basement and ground floor of a sea front hotel. This project involved opening out the dark and enclosed basement to provide a new bar and restaurant. The ground floor was also opened up with the floor space being extended to provide additional covers to the restaurant. The structural amendments had to be mindful of the existing structure and historic modifications.
A series of steel beams were designed to sit within the existing floor depth to support the four storeys above, whilst not causing extensive damage to the above floors whilst the hotel remained open. As the works involved removing a large proportion of internal walls and piers, the steel beams were designed to bear onto steel columns. The columns transfer the load down the building and into the existing foundations and sleeper walls within the basement areas.
