Award winning remodelling and extension to historic property within a conservation area.
Extensive contemporary remodelling of a Victorian property to form spacious family accommodation over four storeys. The extension uses scale and proportion to create a highly contemporary space that is sensitive to the original Victorian villa situated at the heart of the conservation area. The project seeks to open the rear of the house to the garden, create a kitchen and dining space suited to contemporary living whilst improving the relationship between the inside and outside spaces by dealing with the half storey level difference in a positive manner. Transparency, light and views between spaces are all integral to the success of the scheme, creating a space that is animated throughout the day.
The work included lowering the cellar and ground floors to provide extended headroom, and underpinning the outrigger to the basement. A glazed roof to the landing provides natural light down through the building. The existing timber floor joists were assessed to carry additional loading form concrete worktops throughout the kitchen. A new rear two storey rear extension with timber frame extends the basement and ground floor to the rear of the property.
